| biography:
| Explorer, born in Hoddesden, Hertfordshire, SE England, UK. In 1850, his family emigrated to Adelaide, South Australia, where he was educated privately. He joined the South Australian surveyor-general's department, and in 1873 led an expedition from Alice Springs in search of an overland route to Perth. He discovered a massive sandstone monolith which he named Ayers Rock, after Sir Henry Ayers. Although his group was forced to turn back, his maps proved invaluable to Sir John Forrest's successful 1874 expedition from Perth. |
