| biography:
| Explorer and politician, born in Bunbury, Western Australia. From 1864 he worked in Western Australia's survey department, and led expeditions from Perth to Adelaide along the coast of the Great Australian Bight (1870) and into the interior (1874). He was state surveyor-general (1883–90), and the first premier of Western Australia (1890–1901). He was elected to the first federal parliament in 1901, serving as minister for defence (1901–3) and as treasurer (1905–14). In 1918 he became the first Australian to be granted a British peerage. |
