| biography:
| US soldier, born in Spartanburg Co, South Carolina, USA. He trained at West Point, saw extensive combat duty in World War 2 and the Korean War, and became superintendent of the US Military Academy (1960–3). In 1964 he became commander of US forces in Vietnam, but his ‘search and destroy’ strategy proved unsuccessful against the Communist Vietnamese, and after the Tet offensive of 1968 he was recalled to the USA to serve as army chief-of-staff. He retired from the army in 1972, and failed in his bid for the Republican governorship nomination in South Carolina in 1974. |
