| biography:
| Australian politician and landowner, born on Norfolk I, New South Wales, SE Australia. He took part in the expedition which explored the Blue Mts in 1813, then studied at Cambridge and became a lawyer. He was a staunch protagonist of self-government for Australia, which he made the policy of his newspaper, The Australian (established 1824), and he was elected to the Legislative Council in 1842. He retired to England in 1862. |
