| biography:
| Architect and designer, born in London, UK. Much influenced by Pugin and Viollet-le-Duc, he employed a strong mediaeval element in both his architecture and his furniture. Castell Coch (1876–81), near Cardiff, a reconstruction on 13th-c foundations, was designed as a hunting lodge for the 3rd Marquess of Bute. His other project for the marquess, Cardiff Castle (1868–81), is a more eclectic mixture of mediaeval and exotic styles again applied to the remains of a fortress. |
