| biography:
| Inventor, born near Camborne, Cornwall, SW England, UK. A leatherseller by trade, he was distressed by the frequent accidents caused by premature detonation of explosive charges in mines. After several attempts he was successful in combining gunpowder and flax yarn into a reliable slow-burning fuse, which he patented in 1831. |
