| biography:
| Electrical engineer, born in New York City, USA. He studied at the Brooklyn Polytechnic, where he later taught physics. He moved to Washington University in 1913, and the following year to Johns Hopkins, where he became professor of electrical engineering in 1930. In the 1930s he developed the first practical electrical defibrillator, which has since come into general use for the treatment of heartbeat irregularities, and in 1959 introduced the first-aid technique of external heart massage. |
