| Educationist and reformer, born in Exeter, Devon, SW England, UK, the sister of William Carpenter. Trained as a teacher, she opened a girls' school in Bristol in 1829, and took an active part in the movement for the reformation of neglected children. In 1846 she founded a ragged school in Bristol, and several reformatories for girls. |
