| Explorer, naturalist, and linguist, born in Kirkwall, Orkney Is, NE Scotland, UK. He studied medicine at Edinburgh, and in 1848 became a naval surgeon. On the Niger expedition of 1854, he succeeded through the captain's death to the command of the Pleiad, and penetrated 400 km/250 mi farther than any previous traveller. On a second expedition in 1857 he founded a settlement at Lukoja. Within five years he had opened the navigation of the Niger, translated parts of the Bible and prayer book into Hausa, and founded a city state. |
