| biography:
| Airman, born in Owen Sound, Ontario, SE Canada. A member of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (1914), he joined the Royal Flying Corps (1915), and became the most successful Allied ‘ace’ of World War 1, officially credited with the destruction of 72 enemy aircraft. In 1917 he was awarded the VC for single-handedly downing seven German planes. He was appointed the first Canadian air marshal in 1939, and was director of the Royal Canadian Air Force throughout World War 2. |
