| Novelist, born in Accra, Ghana. His early years were spent in Ghana and Nigeria, and he then attended Gordonstoun school, Scotland. He taught English at Oxford until 1982. His novels, which often have an African setting, include A Good Man in Africa (1981, Whitbread; filmed 1994), Brazzaville Beach (1990, James Tait Black), The Blue Afternoon (1993), and The Destiny of Nathalie ‘X’ (1995). Later novels include Nat Tate: An American Artist (1998), Armadillo (1999), and Any Human Heart (2002). Among other works are short stories and the screenplays Good and Bad at Games (1985), Scoop (1987), and Chaplin (1992). |
