| Astrophysicist, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. He studied at Ohio State University and the California Institute of Technology. He established a research group working on the application of nuclear physics to all aspects of astronomy, and is one of the founders of the theory of nucleosynthesis, developed in collaboration with Sir Fred Hoyle and others. He shared the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1983. |
