| biography:
| Oceanographer, born in New York City, New York, USA. He graduated from the City College of New York (1939), worked on the Manhattan Project (1942–5), received a PhD from Columbia University, and then taught physics there and at the universities of Michigan and California, Berkeley. He directed the Scripps Institute of Oceanography in La Jolla, CA (1965–86), and for many years he served as a government adviser on scientific issues. |
