| Writer and journalist, born in Hamburg, N Germany. A worker and communist who spent much of the 1930s in the USSR and Eastern Europe, and fighting on the Republican side in Spain, he lived in East Berlin from 1949. Editor-in-chief of the journal Neue Deutsche Literatur and member of the Central Committee of the ruling communist party (SED), his politically engaged novels, such as Rosenhofstraße (1931), Die Prüfung (1934), Verwandte und Bekannte (1943–53), and Ein neues Kapitel (1956–64), cover themes from World War 2 and the socialist workers' milieu from a Socialist Realist point of view. |
