| biography:
| Dutch politician, historian, and writer, born in Rotterdam, W Netherlands. He joined the Sociaal-Democratische Arbeiderspartij (SDAP) as a student, and contributed from 1903 to the Marxist weekly De Nieuwe Tijd. From 1906 he was editor of the socialist daily Voorwaarts. He co-founded the Marxist weekly De Tribune in 1907 and was its editor (1916–25). In 1909 he left the SDAP and founded the Sociaal-Democratische Partij (SDP, forerunner of the Communistische Partij van Nederland), for which he was an MP (1918–25) and a member of Rotterdam Municipal Council (1919–27). In 1926 he left the Communist Party and briefly rejoined the SDAP. In 1927–41 he was custodian of manuscripts in the Municipal Library of Rotterdam. After 1945 he left politics and became a strong admirer of General de Gaulle. |
