| biography:
| Astronomer, born in Sneek, The Netherlands. He studied at Groningen, and became director and professor of astronomy at Leyden (1908). He computed the size of the universe as 2000 million light years in radius, containing about 80 000 million galaxies. He disputed Einstein's concept of ‘matter with no motion’, and characterized the universe as an expanding curved space–time continuum of ‘motion with no matter’. |
