| biography:
| Printer, engraver, and cartographer, born in Alkmaar or Uitgeest, The Netherlands. He established a successful and well-known printing company in Amsterdam c.1590. In 1620 he made important improvements to the printing process, and enjoyed worldwide fame for his maps and atlases. His son Joan (1596–1673) continued the printing company after his father's death; it closed down in 1696. |
