| biography:
| Banker and politician, born in Heerenveen, The Netherlands. He studied economics at Groningen (1965), worked for the International Monetary Fund (1965–9), became director of The Netherlands Bank (1969–70), and professor of macro-economics at the University of Amsterdam. He served as finance minister in the Den Uyl cabinet (Partij van de Arbeid - Labour) (1973–7) and from 1977 as director of the RABO Bank. In 1998 he was appointed first president of the European Central Bank. |
