| biography:
| Navigator, born in Hoorn, W Netherlands. In the service of the East India Company, he first travelled to the East Indies in 1601–2 with Wolphert Harmensz. He captained the ship in which Jacques Lemaire circumnavigated the globe (1615–17), was the first to traverse Drake Passage (1615), and discovered Cape Horn (1616), which he named after his birthplace. He is presumed to be the author of one of the journals of the expedition. The Schouten Islands were named after him. |
