| Dutch politician, born in Bleskensgraaf, W Netherlands. He studied law at Utrecht (1942–52), then joined the PTT (Posterijen, Telegrafie, Telefonie), became a trade union executive in the construction industry, and was appointed chairman of the PTT council. After entering parliament in 1959, he led the Anti-Revolutionaire Partij (ARP) from 1971, at first opposing the formation of the Christen-Democratisch Appèl (CDA), becoming leader in the house in 1977. He retired from politics in 1978 when publication of his war record revealed that he had volunteered for the SS. |
