| Comedian and actor, born in Stockton-on-Tees, NE England, UK. The son of an engineer, he worked as an engineering apprentice before starting in the music halls. He joined Fred Karno's comedy troupe (1914–18), going on to star in several films in the role of an incompetent, seedy schoolmaster. His films include Good Morning Boys (1937), Oh Mr Porter (1938), The Ghost of St Michael's (1941), and My Learned Friend (1944). In private life he was a linguist, an amateur astronomer, and a pilot. |
