| Writer, born in Schloß Obercunewalde, Oberlausitz, Berlin, Germany. Influenced by Naturalism, he wrote novels set in farming communities which focus on social problems and the role of the aristocracy. Der Büttnerbauer (1895) protrays the inability of a peasant farmer to survive in the face of increasing technology and capitalism, and reveals the influence of Emile Zola and Leo Tolstoy. He also wrote plays and poetry. |
