| German politician, born in Rotthausen (Gelsenkirchen), W Germany. He joined the Unabhängige Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (USPD) in 1918 and the Kommunistiche Partei Deutschlands (KPD) in 1920. He took part in the Spanish Civil War as General Gomez and left for the USSR in 1938. Back in Germany he became German Democratic Republic minister of defence (1950), but was later relieved of all duties for political reasons and expelled from the Sozialistiche Einheitspartei (SED) in 1954. |
