| Zoologist and explorer, born in Frankfurt, WC Germany. He studied at Pavia and Genoa, and went on major expeditions to the Sudan (1821–7) and Ethiopia (1830–4). He published extensive maps and scientific accounts of his travels, including the monumental Reise in Abyssynien (1838–40, Travels in Abyssinia). Rüppell's warbler is named after him. |
