| biography:
| Poet, born in Dessau, EC Germany. A Romantic lyricist who consorted with the most famous poets of his time, he owes his sobriquet to his enthusiasm for the Greek freedom struggle, which he expressed in Lieder der Griechen (1821–4). Many of his poems, such as Am Brunnen vor dem Tore and Das Wandern ist des Müllers Lust, have become folk songs, and his cycles Die schöne Müllerin (1821) and Winterreise (1824) were set to music by Schubert. |
