| German politician, born in Bayreuth, SEC Germany. A wood sculptor by trade, he became a trade union leader, politician for the Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD), a member of the Landtag in Hesse (1924–33), and minister of the interior, Hesse (1928–32). He was interned during 1933–4. As leader of trade union resistance he was in contact with the Kreisauer Kreis, condemned to death in 1944, and hanged in Berlin. |
