| German field marshal, born in Helmscherode, C Germany. He joined the army in 1901, and became an artillery staff officer in World War 1. An ardent Nazi, he was made chief of the Supreme Command of the Armed Forces (1938). In 1940 he signed the Compiègne armistice with France, and in 1945 was one of the German signatories of surrender in Berlin. He was convicted of war crimes at Nuremberg, and executed. |
