| biography:
| Writer and folklorist, born in Biebrich-Rhein, W Germany. He held various academic posts, including curator of the Bayerische Nationalmuseum in Munich and created (on the basis of the Romantics' philological and historical research) his own system of social and folklore studies based on the people as social construct. His chief work in this field is Die Naturgeschichte des Volkes als Grundlage einer deutschen Social-Politik (1853–69). His many novellas, such as Culturgeschichtliche Novellen (1856) and Geschichten aus alter Zeit (1863–4), explore several centuries of cultural history. |
