| Astronomer, born in Schröttinghausen, NW Germany. He studied at Münster and Göttingen, and worked at the Hamburg Observatory (1919–31). He moved to the USA in 1931, and spent the rest of his career at the Mt Wilson (1931–58) and Palomar (1948–58) Observatories. His work gave new estimates for the age and size of the universe. |
