| Writer, born in Stuttgart, SW Germany. An associate of the Swabian Romantic poets, his works include Kriegs- u. Volkslieder (1824), the novella Othello, Mitteilungen aus den Memoiren des Satans, and the satire Der Mann im Mond (all 1825). He is particularly known for his historical novel Lichtenstein (1826), influenced by Scott, and for his 1827 novellas reminiscent of Hoffmann and Tieck, such as Die Sängerin, Phantasien im Bremer Ratskeller, Die Bettlerin am Pont des Arts, and Jud Süß (later highly controversial). His fairy tales, including Der kleine Muck, Saids Schicksale, Kalif Storch, and Das kalte Herz, appeared as part of almanacs (1827–8) and longer tales. Popular in their time, his poems are today less esteemed. |
