| biography:
| Dutch politician and lawyer, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He worked in the agriculture section of the ministry of economics (1934–8) and for the ministry of social affairs (1938–47). In 1947 he became professor of civil and labour law at the Free University of Amsterdam, where he was Rector Magnificus (1962–3, 1965–72). He entered parliament for the Anti-Revolutionaire Partij (ARP) in 1960, was minister for internal affairs (1973–7), MEP (1977–9), and chairman of ZWO (now NVO), the Dutch Organization for Academic Research (1978–84). |
