| German lawyer and politician, born in Alsenz, W Germany. He participated in Hitler's Munich putsch (1923), led the Nazi faction in the Reichstag from 1924, and as Reichsinnenminister (minister of the interior, 1933–43) he was instrumental in extending the Nazi power base, banning trade unionism and freedom of the press, and encouraging anti-Semitism. Ousted by Himmler in 1943, he became ‘Protector’ of Bohemia and Moravia (1943–5). In 1946 he was found guilty of war crimes at Nuremberg and executed. |
