| Philosopher, born in Biebrich, WC Germany. He studied at Heidelberg and Berlin, then taught at Basel, Kiel, Wrocław, Poland (formerly Breslau, Prussia), and finally Berlin (1882–1911), where he was professor of philosophy. He was much influenced by Kant, and is himself a key figure in the idealist tradition in modern social thought. Using some of Hegel's writings as a point of departure, he argued that human knowledge can only be understood as involving the knower's life lived in a historically conditioned culture. He developed a theory of hermeneutics for the interpretation of historical texts, and favoured biography as the best historical method. His ideas exerted considerable influence on Heidegger. |
