| biography:
| German politician, businessman, and board member of HAPAG (Hapag-Lloyd AG), born in Aumühle bei Hamburg, N Germany. He participated in the peace negotiations of 1918–19 and other international conferences. As Reichskanzler, he nominated a minority cabinet in 1922 which adopted a conservative political line under the motto ‘Regierung der Wirtschaft’. His confrontational politics towards the victorious nations in World War 1 foundered in his passive resistance against the Ruhrbesetzung by the French and Belgians, which led to a destabilization of the German currency. His government resigned (12 Aug 1923) in favour of Stresemann's Grand Coalition (13 Aug 1923). |
