| biography:
| Belgian statesman and prime minister (1979–81, 1981–92). He studied at Louvain University, and was adviser to two governments (1965 and 1966), before becoming minister for community problems (1968). He was president of the Dutch-speaking Social Christian Party (1972–9), when he became prime minister at the head of a coalition. He then continued in office, apart from a brief break in 1981, heading no fewer than six coalition governments. |
