| Explorer of Arabia, born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He studied at Oxford, and hunted in 1933 with the Danakil tribes in Ethiopia, exploring the Sultanate of Aussa. In 1935 he joined the Sudan Political Service, and travelled by camel across the Sahara to the Tibesti Mts. He was seconded to the Sudan Defence Force at the outbreak of World War 2, and from 1945 to 1950 explored the Empty Quarter of S Arabia and the borderlands of Oman with Bedu companions, which he described in Arabian Sands (1959). He first travelled in East Africa in 1961, and returned to live with tribal peoples there from 1968 onwards. His autobiography, The Life of My Choice, was published in 1987. |
