| Physical chemist, born in Middletown, Rhode Island, USA. A professor at Cornell University (1895–1937), he founded and edited the Journal of Physical Chemistry (1896–1932). He did research in electrochemistry, colloid chemistry, and contact catalysis. His career was cut short by an accident in 1937. |
