| biography:
| Dancer, choreographer, and teacher, born in Hanover, NC Germany. Her career as Germany's most influential and creative modern dancer began after World War 1, when she toured extensively and opened a school in Dresden in 1920. The school became the focal point of the Neue Künstlerische Tanz (‘new artistic dance’), also known as Ausdruckstanz (‘expressive dance’), a theatrical dance form not based on classical techniques. She created numerous solo and group dances which typified German Expressionist dancing. Her activities were reduced during World War 2, but in 1945 she started work again in Leipzig and Berlin. Through her schools and teaching and her highly dramatic performances she provided the focus for the development of a performance form of European modern dance. |
