| biography:
| British statesman, born in Nairn, Highland, N Scotland, UK. He studied at Cambridge, served in World War 2, and became a Conservative MP in 1955. After a number of junior posts, and several years as Chief Whip (1964–70), he became Leader of the House of Commons (1970–2), secretary of state for Northern Ireland (1972–3) and for employment (1973–4), and home secretary (1979–83). Made a viscount in 1983, he was Leader of the House of Lords until 1988, when he retired following a stroke. |
