| Economist, born in St Petersburg, NW Russia. He studied at Leningrad (St Petersburg) and Berlin universities, taught at Harvard (1931–75), and became director of the Institute of Economic Analysis at New York University (1975–84). He was awarded the 1973 Nobel Prize for Economics for developing the input–output method of economic analysis, used in more than 50 industrialized countries for planning and forecasting. |
