| Astronomer and physicist, born in Guernsey, Channel Islands, UK. He studied at Paris, and early entered his father's business - the manufacture of paperwares - for which he devised many new processes, including an envelope-making machine. He invented the silver chloride battery and did research on the discharge of electricity in gases. A pioneer of celestial photography, he invented the photoheliograph. |
