| Lawyer and government official, born in Scranton, North Dakota, USA. In 1950, he joined the Los Angeles law firm O'Melveny & Myers, and in the 1960s analysed race riots and aided international textile negotiations. Deputy attorney general (1967–9) and deputy secretary of state (1977–81), in 1989–91 he led successful US negotiations for the release of 52 hostages held in Iran. He remained a respected voice in the Democratic Party in the following years, and President Clinton appointed him secretary of state in 1993. He resigned after the 1996 election. |
