He was employed by Bell Telecommunications Laboratories to investigate the use of quartz crystals in long-distance telephone and radio transmissions (c.1923), and was involved in timed observations of the total eclipse of the Sun in 1925. He combined his experiences in 1929, producing the first quartz-controlled electric clock. |
