| biography:
| Philosopher and educationist. She studied at Oxford, and became a fellow and tutor in philosophy at St Hugh's College, Oxford (1949–66, 1976–84). She has taken part in and chaired several important committees of inquiry: special education (1974–8), animal experiments (1979–85), human fertilization (1982–4, regarding in-vitro fertilization and human embryo experiments), higher education (1984), teaching quality (1990), and bioethics (1992–4). She was made a life peer in 1985. |
