name: Wang Yangming
also found as Wang Shouren or Wang Shou-jen

sex: male
lived: (1472–1529)

biography: Philosopher, civil administrator, and general, born in Yu-yao, E China. He was a critic of the neo-Confucian Zhu Xi, and influenced by Zhu's contemporary, Lu Jiuynan (1139–93). He believed in the essential goodness of all (though he crushed the Jiangsu rising 1518), and viewed the human spirit as central to the universe. His philosophy clearly influenced 17th-c Japanese thinkers, 19th-c Japanese dissident movements, and 20th-c Japanese writer Yukio Mishima, and his ideas were also developed by the Chinese philosopher Xiong Shili (1885–1969). His emphasis on the symbiosis of knowledge and action may have influenced similar pronouncements by Lenin and Mao Zedong. His views also anticipated 20th-c existentialism.
