| biography:
| Writer, born in Beijing, China. He joined the Communist Youth League in 1949, and published two novels, Long Live Youth (1953) and The Young Newcomer in the Organization Department (1956). He was denounced as a rightist in the ‘Anti-Rightist Campaign’ of 1958, and forced to work as a manual labourer for 20 years in the remote provinces. Allowed to return to Beijing, he re-emerged with Young Forever (1979). Since then he has held various party Posts, and published collections of short stories, such as A Night in the City (1980) and Andante Cantabile (1981). After the fall of the Gang of Four, he was rehabilitated and became minister of culture. |
