| German general, born in Hamburg, N Germany. In 1943–5 he was president of the Bund Deutscher Offiziere and vice-president of the Nationalkomitee Freies Deutschland. He ordered the capitulation of his troops at Stalingrad, and in 1955 was released from Soviet imprisonment to the German Federal Republic (BRD). |
