| Physiologist, born in Frauenfeld, N Switzerland. As professor of physiology at Zürich (1917–51) he did much important research on the nervous system, and developed methods of stimulating localized areas of the brain by means of needle electrodes. He shared the 1949 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. |
