| Film actor, born in New York City, USA. The son of Russian-Jewish immigrants, he studied at the New School for Social Research Dramatic Workshop, began working in Yiddish theatre, and made his Broadway debut in 1948. His film debut was in The Kentuckian (1955), and for many years he was cast as a villain. It was the 1967 Neil Simon comedy film The Odd Couple which pushed him into major film parts. Later films include Hello Dolly (1969), Cactus Flower (1969), Pirates (1986), I.Q. (1995), Out to Sea (1997), and The Odd Couple II (1998). His final film was Hanging Up (2000). |
