| biography:
| Catholic priest and writer, born in Detroit, Michigan, USA. A lawyer and Civil War veteran, he was inspired by a sermon of Father Isaac Hecker to become (1872) a Paulist priest. His books included an 1891 biography of Hecker that in translation caused a furore in France and led to papal condemnation of modernism. |
